Abdul Alim Muhammad, M.D.
Nation of Islam Minister of Health

Abdul Alim Muhammad

Dr. Abdul Alim Muhammad is a native of York, Pennsylvania where he was born, raised and attended public schools. He was a star athlete in track and field, a National Merit Scholar, an actor, an accomplished poet and a musician. His involvement in civil and human rights struggles began at the age of six when he attended a NAACP convention in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.

On academic scholarship, he attended Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio and graduated with a degree in Biology in 1971. In 1975, he graduated from Case Western Reserve School of Medicine and spent the next five years in training at Harlem Hospital in New York to become a General Surgeon.

He has held several teaching positions at various medical centers and universities, but pursuing his interest in community-based alternative medicine, he founded the Abundant Life Clinic in 1986. He is best known for his clinical research in HIV/AIDS and is a pioneer in the use of Kemron for the treatment of HIV disease.

Dr. Alim Muhammad has been the focus of innumerable newspaper, magazine, radio and TV features over the years and is invited to give lectures and participate in forums and conferences all over the world which has contributed to his travel to more than 36 countries.

He points to one simple fact as the impetus to his accomplishments--that he became a member of the Nation of Islam in 1968. His sincere effort to follow the Honorable Elijah Muhammad and now the Honorable Louis Farrakhan has bolstered his rise through the ranks of the Nation of Islam and laid the foundation for his success. He was named an assistant Minister in 1973, Minister of Muhammad Mosque No. 4 (Washington, DC) in 1981, appointed the National Spokesman for the Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan in 1988 and named the Nation of Islam's first Minister of Health and Human Services in 1992.

Dr. Alim's current goals include the development of a National Healthcare Plan that will not only elevate the health status of Blacks, but also improve the economic conditions of urban communities' nation-wide. Not limited to national boundaries, Dr. Alim seeks to organize an international relief movement whose mission is to alleviate human suffering all over the world. Although these goals are formidable, his approach is distinct. Ask those who work with him who often hear him say, "Compassion, not greed, is the motivating force behind what we do!"

Dr. Abdul Alim Muhammad is currently doing a lecture series on the following topics of discussion:

"Aids and Black Folk: Death Plague or Life's Ultimate Challenge"

"The Key to the Proper Education of the Black Student"
