Henri L. Muhammad is a concert violinist, Founder and Executive Director of Muhammad School of Music in Buffalo, New York. He is also music director of five violin programs throughout the city of Buffalo, in addition to serving as Music Faculty of the Buffalo State College Upward Bound Program. |
Born
and raised in Buffalo, his parents began his violin studies when he was seven
years old. He continued his study
with members of the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, and with faculty of the
Eastman School of Music as a high school student.
Graduating with honors in 1994 from the Buffalo Academy for Visual and
Performing Arts, Mr. Muhammad attended and graduated in 1998 from the University
of Rochester with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Music.
As
a student at the University of Rochester, he
volunteered as a violin instructor with the Eastman School of Music Community
Outreach Program. After graduation,
he was invited to be an instructor and mentor with the Jamaica Orchestra for
Youth (JOY), on the island of Jamaica. Mr.
Muhammad completed his Masters of Science in Education degree in December 2003,
designing the distinct Muhammad School of Music Violin Curriculum.
During
Mr. Muhammad’s classical music and violin study, he often found himself to be
the only Black and minority musician in the various orchestras he was selected
to participate. Inspired by
classical violinist and internationally known leader, Minister Louis Farrakhan,
one of Henri L. Muhammad’s many goals, are to inspire Black and minority youth
to take an interest in classical music and to establish institutions to make
classical music study more accessible to them throughout America.
Henri
L. Muhammad has performed on many stages nationally and internationally, and has
received numerous awards and recognition. He performs regularly with the
Gateways African American Classical Music Festival Orchestra at the Eastman
School of Music, and in April 2004 performed with the Buffalo Philharmonic
Orchestra at Kleinhans Music Hall. Henri
L. Muhammad plays a number of secondary instruments, and has four recordings.
His latest CD, El Salvador (Spanish for ‘The Saviour’), is a
wonderful compilation including original instrumental works inspired by Latin
American rhythms.
